I like to use the Square Foot Gardening approach promoted by Mel Bartholomew; I highly recommend this method for an easy, straightforward way to grow lots of vegetables in a small amount of space.  For more information, see the following:

Thank you for all your links.I enjoyed reading about gardening!  .I like the idea of the square foot gardens...I had a 45' X 20'  garden in Madras for 20 years and loved it and have missed having one ever\ since.  I have a bit of space to the east side...but a home there shadows except for maybe and hour or 2 in the summer afternoons.  .The only thing that will work for mewould be  some pots.  I do have 6 small pots of herbs that I have had for 4 years here.

If we find a space to share, I would be glad to help tend the garden.
