    Seed/start/plant list

Through this forum, we would like to find ways to share seeds with one another.

    In this thread, please list:

    • The seeds that you have, and would be willing to share with others
    • The seeds that you are looking for

Let's see if we can do some matchmaking!

    Re: Seed/start/plant list

Thank you so much for coordinating this, Andy!

I would like to share with you from what you have on hand:

    • radishes
    • green onion
    • marigold
    • eggplant
    • spinach
    • basil
    • sunflower
    • lavendar

I would like to share in an order from you what you previously indicated you are ordering, the following:

    • zucchini
    • and maybe the rhubarb

I would like to place the following order when you order from Gurney's, if you have not yet done so already (please let me know if you have or haven't, and if you haven't, how we can coordinate getting my payment to you, and an estimate for shipping):

    • 14590 Leek, American Flag Leek Onion (1) $1.95
    • 14567 Chard, Bright Lights Chard Greens (1) $2.55
    • 14560 Chard, Lucullus Swiss Chard Greens (1) $1.75
    • 14329 Carrots, Scarlet Nantes Carrot (1) $3.95
    • 73526 Arugula, Gourmet Greens (1) $2.25
    • 14551 Lettuce, Mild Mesclun Mix Greens (1) $5.95
    • 14606 Chives, Chive Herbs (1) $1.95
    • 73508 Bush Beans, Green and Gold Blend Bush Beans (1) $1.95
    • 66305 Turnip, Laurentian Rutabega (1) $1.95
    • 14694 Parsnip, All American Parsnip (1) 1.95
    • 14822 Peas, Little Marvel Peas (1) $1.95
    • 14832 Peas, Sugar Snap Peas (1) $2.25

I purposely ordered extra chard, carrots, and lettuce(s) to possibly carry over and/or donate to the community for next year.  I would like to plant some chamomile but did not find it on Gurney's if anyone has access to some.

Just to share a couple of my own notes:

    * The local extension agency says garlic can go in the ground NOW!  Not sure if this is true or not -- I'm not ready but thought I would share that information.

    * I plan on purchasing tomato and pepper starts once they are (and I am) ready if anyone wants to go shopping with me for those.  I haven't had much luck in the past with starting those from seed for some reason.  But if someone else does have good luck, I would rather buy them from a community member.

    -- Thank you!

    Re: Seed/start/plant list

Based on Teena's post, I'm planning to switch my seed order to Seed Savers Exchange.  This will assure us of heirloom seeds that can be shared and saved freely with our community (and provide more organic options besides).

Instead of the seeds that I listed from Gurney's and Cooks Garden, I'm thinking of the following from SSE:

    • 908(OG) - Bean, Ideal Market
    • 876(OG) - Squash, Fordhook Acorn
    • 1345 - Zucchini, Golden
    • 1191(OG) - Cucumber, Japanese Climbing
    • 774(OG) - Tomatillo, Green
    • 107 - Tomato, Amish Paste
    • 1128(OG) - Tomato, Blondkopfchen
    • 1398(OG) - Pepper, Wenk's Yellow Hots
    • 1042 - Pepper, Garden Sunshine
    • 348 - Broccoli, Calabrese
    • 1249 - Oregano, Greek
    • 1255 - Tarragon, Russian
    • 1252 - Sage, Green Culinary
    • 1253 - Spearmint
    • 820 - Thyme
    • 279(OG) - Parsley, Giante d'Italia
    • 1243(OG) - Chives

Would you like to order equivalents in the SSE catalog for your seeds listed above?  (If not, I may still order some other things besides seeds from Gurney's and we can include your choices in the order.)

As for garlic, in "Garlic for the Home Garden," Oregon State Extension recommends that garlic be planted between September and November for overwintering.  That's when SSE ships garlic bulbs as well.

I'd like to try starting tomatoes and peppers from seeds again; likewise, I haven't had much luck with this.  This year, however, I'm planning to use a grow light and see if they do better that way.  If they're successful, you're welcome to some starts.  :-)

    Re: Seed/start/plant list

Hi Andy, Thanks for your offer to share your seeds. I would be interested in all of them in the top list and broccoli in the second list.  However, I realize I can't plant all of those, and not sure how much I can plant, so I'm going to need a step by step lesson.  Can you tell me how many seeds I can plant in the size bed that I would use.  (Same size as Beth's but I don't remember the size.)   I believe you wrote something about this in an earlier post.  I will look there again.

    Thank you!

    Love, Jessica

    Re: Seed/start/plant list

Oops! I see you have a new seed list.  Count me in for:

    1. beans
    2. zucchini
    3. cucumber
    4. tomatillo
    5. pepper
    6. broccoli
    7. spearmint
Everything I said before still applies; I don't know how much I can plant.  JD

Thank you for sharing the youtube link.  WOW!  Very informative.  I'm glad I am growing my own garden this year and will be making more conscientious decisions about where I shop for seeds in the future.

    Re: Seed/start/plant list

Andy, will you be starting some things indoors soon?  Do you have an idea of when our seeds will be in?  (No rush/no pressure...Just wonnering.)

If anyone else is interested in starting transplants indoors (or even an indoor herb garden), I will in all liklihood be making a run to the <gulp> STORE -- I hate "shopping" -- to pick up the things I need to start transplants inside so either join me or let me know what you need me to pick up.  I will be getting peat (I almost wrote Pete -- hee hee) pots and a tray or two, for sure.

I still haven't taken the time to go get everything together in the garage so I'm not sure what all I need but I will be doing that this week or coming weekend.  I actually traded out a massage for some landscape work (bartered it from Craig's List) and I'm meeting with him on Monday so I might have some better ideas after that.

And as for seeds, I'm really hoping that we can get something of a community seed bank going.  Please save the seeds from the veggies that you grow this year!

    Re: Seed/start/plant list

    Hello Andy,

I am new to the teahouse; but, love the idea. I got a late start on the garden this year but have managed to grow a big beautiful tomatillo. Only after tons of flowers and no fruit did I look up the info on it and find out that it takes two tomatillos to tango. Do you or anyone you know have a spare grown tomatillo? I might even be able to use a few flowers and a paint brush to try and eke out some fruit this year. Please let me know. I can be reached at linkmissing@hotmail.com  Thanks!
