    Welcome!

    Welcome!

This forum is a place to exchange information about gardening in Central Oregon.  Please join the conversation about what you're growing, what you'd like to share and/or borrow, what help you need, etc.

By way of introduction, please also see Beth's blog post: food shortages may be around the corner.

    soil

I'm going to be needing some soil mixture as I build my gardening box.  Would anyone like to buy some stuff in bulk and share it?  I have access to a trailer that can be pulled behind my jeep.

    Re: soil

When are you thinking about moving on this soil thang, Beth?  I don't think I'm personally going to be ready until closer to Mother's Day for the outside stuffs but I would like to share in soil purchases when the time does come.  Andy mentioned something once about a 1/3 1/3 1/3 mix that he uses, and my stepmom swears by Super Soil, the place just south of the first Redmond exit.  I am open to discussion as far as soil recommendations.

Damn, girlfriend--you've got a picture on here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wowsers, I'm impressed....

    Now, what's the picture of?!

About the soil--Andy can give us the recipe, which we could then get a boatload--well, a load of some sort of the compost, mix it with another load of vermiculite, and then another load of _____________?  Andy, what' the third component?

I'd love to share it with you,Michele, ma belle.

    Re: soil

It's what's called "Mel's Mix" in the Square Foot Gardening book.  It consists of 1/3 coarse vermiculite, 1/3 peat moss, and 1/3 mixed compost.

The vermiculite is the hardest thing to find in quantity; Beth was the one that tracked it down last year from one of the local nurseries. You can also substitute perlite if you can't find vermiculite.

    Re: soil

I'll start watching the classified ads on line and Craig's List (farm and garden section) to see if anyone is wanting to get rid of anything we want.  Say, do we want a horse, pygmy goats, border collie pups, or a rooster?  ;o)  There's some on Craig's List now.

I'll also keep my eye open for vermiculite but I don't get the printed newspaper so don't see the ads at all.
