Host, Virtual Tea House

don’t pretend you don’t get it

that moment
when you realize that someone you just met
as if casually at a party
in say, Winnipeg
knows a friend of yours--the only person you know
who lives in Mauritania
you get it

and that moment
when you realize
that you are made of the same
stuff as the wolf
or the rat
just with a few
flourishes or
back flips
of the DNA helix
you get it

and then that moment
when your eyes open wide
and you know in your gut
that you are the very same stuff
as that person you despise
you get it

You may not be able to keep it.

But you get it.

Great poem, Beth!  Man, the "keeping it" part is so damn difficult!  But aren't the colors beautiful when you do?

We are all made of the same stuff.  I have traveled the globe and we are more alike than different if we can keep the politics out.  Your work invokes introspective thoughts for me.  Well done.

I can't stop laughing at the truth of this piece, especially with the "you get it", because yes, I got it! Very well written Beth.

acquaintances are like spider webs...we meet, and get into a web of friendships or knowing some people we don't realize we're silently connected...a web of humanity...:)

wonderful poem!!!

Beth, I am more dense than the rest.  I am not pretending.

I did look up Mauritania.  It is very close but not contiguous with Morroco.  So the closest I've been is Egypt.  :-)  I got that but

probably can't keep that either.

Hi all--

Jim, you make me smile so often and so much!  So, let's see.  This poem is about the web of connection through all living things; we humans are often aware of it through connections that astonish us--like being friends with someone that then in conversation with someone a half world away, and in entirely different context, you find out these two very disparate folks are connected.  It begins to feel like there's an invisible web of what--love? binding us to each other.  My favorite image of it is that we can usually only see the back of the tapestry with all the knots and goobers, but the front...ah, that's where the connections become visible, seamless.

Does that help?

The moment you realize that what separates you from other people is ego, and only ego, then you get it.

The moment you realize that what separates you from creation is ego, and only ego, then you get it.

The moment you realize what separates you from God is ego, and only ego, you get it.

The moment you realize that what leads you to dehumanize others, and desacralize the world is the brokenness in you, and not any brokenness out there, then you get it.

But you know what?  There are times when I still don't get it.

Bill--

That was what I wanted to say...you said it more poetically!! So there... you are a poet, but you don't yet know it...

But I get it.

I've always been appalled by our dedication to yowling about differences while being indisposed to rejoice about sameness!

About Beth Patterson

The Virtual Tea House website became 'word-ripe' when, over a cup of jasmine green, I realized that the web has an expanding part to play in the communal aspects of spiritual growth.

With a master's degree in religion, my career spans 20 years in end of life care and I currently work in the field of child abuse intervention and advocacy.

Here in beautiful Central Oregon, my spiritual homes of the high desert and the mountains are both in proximity. And for good measure, four hours away is Grandmother Ocean and the stunning Oregon Coast.

I'm making decent progress on the goal set by my mother early on: she taught us that the goal of humanity should be to become ever-more eccentric, i.e. more fully human.

Entering the 'forest-dweller' phase of life, I am honored to host the Virtual Tea House for all who wish to explore how our lives are enriched and made new a thousand times each day by the spirituality we embody. Exploring this engagement together is the purpose of the Virtual Tea House.

Welcome! Let's have a cup of virtual tea together and share what brings us joy, what we are being taught by life, how we are leaning into the Big Questions posed to us each day in sometimes 'distressing disguises'.
