Ten Things I Learned This Week—December 6, 2009

Four weeks...it's now 'in the groove'.  Here we go--

advent-door-blog-2008-12-20

1. There's a crack, a crack in everything.  Leonard Cohen has so much heart. I've spent time this week listening to his music and watched "I'm Your Man" for the third time.

2. Returning to my Buddhist meditation practice is like petting Geronimo--so familiar and comforting. Taking refuge, I never left.

3.  Laughing with co-workers is medicine all of its own (I work in a medical environment).

4. You may ask, 'What were youse laughing about?'  Well, there was an idea that arose about making our own Calendar Girls  type calendar for a fundraiser.  I'm not sure who would buy it, but we'd have a hell of a lot of fun making it. And it was pretty much fun just thinking about it.

5. Sometimes, it's all just worth it.

6. I love going to Lowe's with Andy.  And Home Depot, too. I don't know why. I just do. We had a date there yesterday.

7. My house is a lot warmer with 12 bales of straw against the north wall.

8. Dancing with friends in my little cozy house as we cook a meal together and it snows and blows outside just makes my heart smile.

9. Giving a talk for a local community about  "We are all meant to be mothers of God - God is always needing to be born" that beautiful quote by Meister Eckhart, was such a lovely way for me to release my heart and soul into the anticipation of Advent.

10. Forgetting my perfect offering, I offer my inconsistency, my humanity, the hole in my soul.

About Beth Patterson

The Virtual Tea House website became 'word-ripe' when, over a cup of jasmine green, I realized that the web has an expanding part to play in the communal aspects of spiritual growth.

With a master's degree in religion, my career spans 20 years in end of life care and I currently work in the field of child abuse intervention and advocacy.

Here in beautiful Central Oregon, my spiritual homes of the high desert and the mountains are both in proximity. And for good measure, four hours away is Grandmother Ocean and the stunning Oregon Coast.

I'm making decent progress on the goal set by my mother early on: she taught us that the goal of humanity should be to become ever-more eccentric, i.e. more fully human.

Entering the 'forest-dweller' phase of life, I am honored to host the Virtual Tea House for all who wish to explore how our lives are enriched and made new a thousand times each day by the spirituality we embody. Exploring this engagement together is the purpose of the Virtual Tea House.

Welcome! Let's have a cup of virtual tea together and share what brings us joy, what we are being taught by life, how we are leaning into the Big Questions posed to us each day in sometimes 'distressing disguises'.
