Sentenced: Skinned into life

As we near one of the 'thin places' in the calendar year-- All Soul's Day, All Hallow's E'en, and yes, even the Day of the Dead, those who have gone before are working with me even harder than usual to make contact and to teach me through my thick skin.

Being an initiate

to the wisdom years

    humbled and open

living with boundaries

    but without limits.

My grandmother's skin*

is my talisman

   door to the mysteries

   alive and vulnerable

now incapable of ever being harmed.

Inside me that skin now breathes into life

   what seemed to be outside.

Ancestral love flows through my veins

teaching me sacrifice, sacredness and hope

stronger with each passing season

an amulet of love.

*Consider reading this story of my grandmother's near death experience to make some sense out of this poem!  Basically she said that Jesus (her spiritual guide) is actually closer than our own skin.  Pretty mystical words from this pragmatic centenarian...

Submitted for One Single Impression prompt: talisman.  Thanks to Joseph Harker of Naming Constellations  for hosting this week’s prompt. Visit OSI for a smorgasbord of impressions about each week’s prompt…this one about talismans!

p.s. Felt inclined to share this story with you today. The image of my grammy's hands, her last day with us, cradling three-week-old Aviva, will never leave me: http://bullseyebaby.wordpress.com/2008/06/11/treasures/

These are tender, yet powerful words.  You speak from your own but the defining quality reaches out to all those whose hearts are open. Past, present, future.

In your introduction you refer to the "thin places" in the calendar -- I really like that. I think that we also have such "thin" moments in our own life cycle where we can be reached across that divide.

So powerful, the words of a woman of so many years of living this life, receiving the messages of the Mystery, and of freeing herself and now so many others, to love.  Good, beautiful wisdom to remember, Beth, and thank you for telling the story.  So hard to let go of "mothering" or "teaching"  or "protecting" those in our lives and just focus on LOVING them. It truly is the only thing that makes a difference.

So tender and true. And to compliment your insightful words, I offer John O'Donohue:

Remembering

Let us not look for you only in memory,

Where we would grow lonely without you.

You would want us to find you in presence,

Beside us when beauty brightens,

When kindness glows

And music echoes eternal tones.

Erriee...(how do you spell that?).  Weeks before my grandfather died suddenly of a heart-attack, he sent me the words to My Grandmother's Hands and a story of what the song meant to him.  Thank you for this moving poem and weaving a more full story into it.

Oh Beth, this was such a beautiful read. I also read your grandmother's near death experience story. It touched me deeply. I KNOW what she means.

In another way, at another time...words cannot explain how I related to this. I know I was meant to stop by here to read this, that is for sure.

Wow~  what a moving story, Beth- I really enjoyed reading it.  Loved your poem too - the words "door to the mysteries

  alive and vulnerable

now incapable of ever being harmed." really resonated with me.  I love this time of year and all the mysteries that it holds and especially enjoy that maybe those who have gone before are a little closer than they usually are.

OR

the other post at the end of this one, that was linked from my other Veggie...blog. Either one is fine to use (with linkback to MPP, thanks). I thought Id give you the choice. If not what you had in mind, that's fine too.

Delete this comment Beth, I didn't know how else to write to you. And do let me know what you decide ok!

About Beth Patterson

The Virtual Tea House website became 'word-ripe' when, over a cup of jasmine green, I realized that the web has an expanding part to play in the communal aspects of spiritual growth.

With a master's degree in religion, my career spans 20 years in end of life care and I currently work in the field of child abuse intervention and advocacy.

Here in beautiful Central Oregon, my spiritual homes of the high desert and the mountains are both in proximity. And for good measure, four hours away is Grandmother Ocean and the stunning Oregon Coast.

I'm making decent progress on the goal set by my mother early on: she taught us that the goal of humanity should be to become ever-more eccentric, i.e. more fully human.

Entering the 'forest-dweller' phase of life, I am honored to host the Virtual Tea House for all who wish to explore how our lives are enriched and made new a thousand times each day by the spirituality we embody. Exploring this engagement together is the purpose of the Virtual Tea House.

Welcome! Let's have a cup of virtual tea together and share what brings us joy, what we are being taught by life, how we are leaning into the Big Questions posed to us each day in sometimes 'distressing disguises'.
