behind the lilacs

eyes of the heart
Collage done in March 2009 from a dream, titled  'The Eye of the Heart'

On any graced day

The stranger shuffles, glides, stalks, trails over a horizon

Pushing aside the lilacs obscuring my heart's door

Asking only an audience.

If no one answered the knock

Would anyone actually be there?

Stranger things have happened.

And to me.

Lilacs in my front yard obscuring the view, sometimes with my gratitude.

Submission for this week's One Single Impression prompt: the stranger.  This week the prompt came from that stranger that lives in my skin--my very own self.  Glad my OSI friends are having fun with the prompt.  Click on the link above to feast on their offerings!

This reminded me of the Schrodiger's Cat paradox in physics, all rounded off with a marvellous touch of poetic mysticism.

Firstly, thanks for such a wonderful prompt.. its unique, to say the least and has such a varied scope for interpretation..

And thanks again for sharing such a wonderful piece of poetry! Certainly, a lot of strange things happen to us, engendered by quite a few causes, none more than we, ourselves!

Beth, you have nice poems for your nice prompt.  I gather that if one doesn't answer the knock then perhaps no one was there!  Great.

As I said on that OSI, I could be your stranger.  Except for the 'stalking' bit, I suppose.  Your photo over there made it inviting for a guy to be a

shuffling, gliding, stalking stranger.  The collage is very fitting as well.

Thanks,

..

First, thanks so much for the prompt. It finally gave me just what I needed to write about an experience that meant much to me.

I love this poem, the idea of the lilacs blocking the view (in both directions) is intriguing.  Also with such a slew of movement verbs I imagine all sorts of four legged (and more) beasties coming to visit.

Beth, that is amazing. I like the rhetorical question. I will be giving that some thought this week.

Thank you for this wonderful prompt. I find myself a stranger, joining with a group of strangers, to give my impression of a stranger. I'm sure "stranger things have happened", but this has been a enjoyable strange thing.

There's always someone there even when you're not.

If nobody knocked at the door, would it still exist?

Interesting question.

About Beth Patterson

The Virtual Tea House website became 'word-ripe' when, over a cup of jasmine green, I realized that the web has an expanding part to play in the communal aspects of spiritual growth.

With a master's degree in religion, my career spans 30 years in end of life care and child abuse intervention and advocacy.

Here in beautiful Central Oregon, my spiritual homes of the high desert and the mountains are both in proximity. And for good measure, four hours away is Grandmother Ocean and the stunning Oregon Coast.

I'm making decent progress on the goal set by my mother early on: she taught us that the goal of humanity should be to become ever-more eccentric, i.e. more fully human.

Entering the 'forest-dweller' phase of life, I am honored to host the Virtual Tea House for all who wish to explore how our lives are enriched and made new a thousand times each day by the spirituality we embody. Exploring this engagement together is the purpose of the Virtual Tea House.

Welcome! Let's have a cup of virtual tea together and share what brings us joy, what we are being taught by life, how we are leaning into the Big Questions posed to us each day in sometimes 'distressing disguises'.
