re-cognition

Each milli-second is new

cells and breath mutate.

Each brilliant sparkling particle of a unit of time

is a world unto itself.

Our penchant  for categorizing and

likening to

keeps us from the absolute

potential of this moment.

And then...

there's the gulps of recognition

the stinging tears

where it's

like against like.

These are such cogent observations, I love how you've worked with them and the prompt!

Love the holism in this - I'm all for such wholeness.

We do find ways to avoid the moment, don't we. Wonder why--how and when we got away from actually living.

Those middle lines are so powerfully true:

"Our penchant  for categorizing and/likening to/keeps us from the absolute/potential of this moment."

Too focused on knowing and not enough on being.

You nailed it once again, Beth.  I must strive to meet each second with curosity, knowing nothing; in this we find the bliss that is our true nature.

Hi Beth, I found a lot of those gulps of recognition searching for more on re-cognition, a lot of them.  Nothing satified me with the hyphenated word, re-cognition.  I may never know.  :-)

I do like your poem anyway, our minds are so powerful in their search for knowledge.  That knowledge can be gleamed from any and every encounter, I do believe the very young are best at it.

Jim--

There's not an actual word 're-cognition'--but of course that's how the Latin word derived, 'another knowing'.  Thanks for spending the time to research it!

Wow! That was so perceptive.  I really understood the verse about "the penchant". Isn't THAT the truth?  You got inside my head (that's pretty rare).

P.S.  I also like your wordplay with the title. I have fun with that myself.

I really enjoyed this, Beth, especially the second verse. I was reminded of the first time I considered the idea of a 'perfect moment' - it was a Star Trek movie.

Yes. I confess. I am a Trekkie!

And when did we slip our masks into place in order to remake the now into a facade of yesterday and an evasion of tomorrow. Nice work, Beth!

About Beth Patterson

The Virtual Tea House website became 'word-ripe' when, over a cup of jasmine green, I realized that the web has an expanding part to play in the communal aspects of spiritual growth.

With a master's degree in religion, my career spans 20 years in end of life care and I currently work in the field of child abuse intervention and advocacy.

Here in beautiful Central Oregon, my spiritual homes of the high desert and the mountains are both in proximity. And for good measure, four hours away is Grandmother Ocean and the stunning Oregon Coast.

I'm making decent progress on the goal set by my mother early on: she taught us that the goal of humanity should be to become ever-more eccentric, i.e. more fully human.

Entering the 'forest-dweller' phase of life, I am honored to host the Virtual Tea House for all who wish to explore how our lives are enriched and made new a thousand times each day by the spirituality we embody. Exploring this engagement together is the purpose of the Virtual Tea House.

Welcome! Let's have a cup of virtual tea together and share what brings us joy, what we are being taught by life, how we are leaning into the Big Questions posed to us each day in sometimes 'distressing disguises'.
