'Beannacht' from the late John O' Donohue

Technorati Profile

Irish poet, priest and philosopher John O' Donohue died suddenly almost a year ago on January 3, 2008 at the age of 52. A mesmerizing public speaker and soulful writer, John developed a global audience for his work. His life has been celebrated on several continents.  He will be forever missed.

The following passage is from O'Donohue's final book "To Bless the Space Between Us: A Collection of Invocations and Blessings".  This 'beannacht' (blessing) for leaders is in gratitude for John's lasting impact on the world, and with hope for the incoming USA leadership. Of course, we each play leadership roles in our  families and communities so this is for us mere mortals as well.

May you have the grace and wisdom to act kindly.
Learning to distinguish between what is personal and what is not.

May you be hospitable to criticism.

May you never put yourself at the center of things.

May you act not from arrogance but out of service.

May you work on yourself,
Building and refining the ways of your mind.

May those who work for you know
You see and respect them.

May you learn to cultivate the art of presence
In order to engage with those who meet you.

When someone fails or disappoints you,
May the graciousness with which you engage
Be their stairway to renewal and refinement.

May you treasure the gifts of the mind
Through reading and creative thinking,
So that you continue as a servant of the frontier
Where the new will draw its enrichment from the old,
And you never become a functionary.

May you  know the wisdom of deep listening,
The healing of wholesome words,
The encouragement of the appreciative gaze,
The decorum of held dignity,
The springtime edge of the bleak question.

May you have a mind that loves frontiers
So that you can evoke the bright fields
That lie beyond the view of the regular eye.

May you have good friends
To mirror your blind spots.

May leadership be for you
A true growth adventure.

Dear Beth,

What wonderful words and blessing to share.  The death of John O' Donohue was truly a loss to humanity ... thank goodness he left the gifts of his words for us to embrace.

Happiest New Year wishes.

Thanks, Jane and Christine--

His loss to the seen world and yet, on the 1st anniversary of his death, I sense his presence, maybe even more strongly.

As the presence of Jesus said to my Grandmother, 'it really doesn't matter which side of the veil you're on'...

for the rest of that story!

Sweet warmth of heart and hearth to you both on this first weekend of the new year!

About Beth Patterson

The Virtual Tea House website became 'word-ripe' when, over a cup of jasmine green, I realized that the web has an expanding part to play in the communal aspects of spiritual growth.

With a master's degree in religion, my career spans 20 years in end of life care and I currently work in the field of child abuse intervention and advocacy.

Here in beautiful Central Oregon, my spiritual homes of the high desert and the mountains are both in proximity. And for good measure, four hours away is Grandmother Ocean and the stunning Oregon Coast.

I'm making decent progress on the goal set by my mother early on: she taught us that the goal of humanity should be to become ever-more eccentric, i.e. more fully human.

Entering the 'forest-dweller' phase of life, I am honored to host the Virtual Tea House for all who wish to explore how our lives are enriched and made new a thousand times each day by the spirituality we embody. Exploring this engagement together is the purpose of the Virtual Tea House.

Welcome! Let's have a cup of virtual tea together and share what brings us joy, what we are being taught by life, how we are leaning into the Big Questions posed to us each day in sometimes 'distressing disguises'.
