Life is a Verb-alicious thang

My new friend Patti Digh, of the 37 Days (what would you be doing if you only had 37 days to live?)  blog, has just published another book--but this is not just another book...it's the amalgamation of much of her life work and passion, and its title is: life is a verb

Not a self-help book, but a soul-help book.

"Damn, girl. You write good." Lee Hancock, Dallas Morning News

This is a smorgasbord of soulful story, art, photography that Patti has put together with the help of the friends from around the world that  she has made through her blog and work.  It is a tour de force of living soulfully and even dangerously by some standards. Even the paper the book is printed on is lovely...you know the kind of book that you pet like a beloved cat?

SIIC 2008 Beth and Patti
sure nuf, Dave, she took this photo just like you said, nonchalantly with her left hand!
That would be me on the left with the cheesy smile...

I had the privilege of meeting Patti in Portland, Oregon this past July while she was teaching at Reed College. She's a gracious, funny, connector. With an earthy drawl, she's the kind of person you'd love to sit down and have a mint julep or 3 with...and then the conversation would get even more lively...probably even a tad bawdy--you know how you just know these things? Unfortunately, I didn't get to have those mint juleps with her--hopefully there will be another time to make up for the lost one!

Honoring the roots of her blog, Patti did a 37 day countdown to the book's unveiling. She asked her readers to send in stories about how their lives would change if they indeed had only 37 days left to live.  The 37 published responses were inspiring, challenging and sometimes brought tears to my eyes.  There are pictures and stories of the book crossing multiple country lines in interesting ways. There are 'verb sightings' around the globe. It's a movement--teaching us how to practice our living so that when we come to dying--and one of these days it won't be practice--it will be as easy as letting a balloon slip out of our hands.

When I read another new friend's post tonight, I knew that I needed to get in gear and do this post. Dave Pollard  of the 'How to Save the World' blog, is relishing Patti's book like a dog with a new bone.  It's sweet to hear how he's working it through his psyche and soul.  Thanks, Dave, for the kick!

We're hoping to bring Patti to Bend, Oregon in the spring of 2009 to do some talking and connecting and some of her own inimitable loving.  I encourage y'all to ask her to come to your area--this is a topic that needs to be dialogued about, with a person you don't want to miss.

Go get the book, or order it on Amazon, here. You'll be further along your path to making peace with your life, making love with your life, and verbing it everywhere!

Thanks, Patti. You're one of a kind. Thank you for your inspiration and encouragement. You are not just loved, you are love!

Does anyone else find this reviewers comments: ""Damn, girl. You write good." Lee Hancock, Dallas Morning News" very sexist?

If s/he wrote "Damn, boy. You write good." would it sound as edgy/good/whatever?

So I just started the book and absolutely love it for two reasons. The first is the new term I have learned. "Marginalaia..." How very cool a concept (obviously I don't write much). The other is how she talks about her children and tells some of their stories. Touching and incredible. Patti how very fortunate your girls are to have a mom like you! Can't wait to dive in deeper. Also love the artwork.

About Beth Patterson

The Virtual Tea House website became 'word-ripe' when, over a cup of jasmine green, I realized that the web has an expanding part to play in the communal aspects of spiritual growth.
One of my favorite hats, among several is: initiated firekeeper in the Sacred Fire Community. Hosting a monthly community fire circle, I'm being taught that the simple act of sitting around a fire with the intent of holding open-hearted space makes for some soulful community!
With a master's degree in religion, my career spans 20 years in end of life care and I currently work in the field of child abuse intervention and advocacy.
Here in beautiful Central Oregon, my spiritual homes of the high desert and the mountains are both in proximity. And for good measure, four hours away is Grandmother Ocean and the stunning Oregon Coast.
I'm making decent progress on the goal set by my mother early on: she taught us that the goal of humanity should be to become ever-more eccentric, i.e. more fully human.
Entering the 'forest-dweller' phase of life, I am honored to host the Virtual Tea House for all who wish to explore how our lives are enriched and made new a thousand times each day by the spirituality we embody. Exploring this engagement together is the purpose of the Virtual Tea House.
Welcome! Let's have a cup of virtual tea together and share what brings us joy, what we are being taught by life, how we are leaning into the Big Questions posed to us each day in sometimes 'distressing disguises'.
