What is the Sacred Fire Community?

"Lighting your life for 800,000 years..."

The purpose of the Sacred Fire Community is to rekindle our relationship to each other and the world through the universal and sacred spirit of fire.

In most--if not all--spiritual traditions, Fire is the energy of the heart, and it is associated with such qualities as connection, community, joy, laughter, passion and transformation. Fire is the source of renewal for our soul. It is an elemental force that connects us to nature, the Divine, and the deep and perennial wisdom of our own hearts.  Regular community fires like ours are happening in over four dozen locations around the world.  The intention is to create more opportunities for heart-felt connection in a time otherwise characterized by coldness; an era when disconnection from each other and nature is the norm.  All spiritual traditions are welcomed and honored around the fire.  The Sacred Fire Community is thus created of people from many tradtitions from all over the globe who value the spiritual nature of Fire as a way to touch what is essential and eternal within us.

Each of the communities (or hamlets as they're also called) has uniqueness; what is central to them is the commitment to holding monthly fires where they gathers to grow and explore what it means to be a community.   There are visiting mara'akame (shamans in the Huichol tradition) who help the communities connect with the larger Sacred Fire Community, and teach us about living more fully.  They also bring bad jokes, good chocolate and wonderful copal from their travels!

Portland is fortunate to have its very own mara'akame as a Firekeeper: Jonathan Merritt. Jonathan can be reached at meansitt@yahoo.com or by phone at 503-643-2462. Jonathan also serves Seattle and Bend with 'visiting mara'akame' healing work. Larry Messerman, mara'akame who lives in Sebastapol, CA, also travels through our area and visits our fire circles a few times each year. Larry's email: lmesserman@gmail.com or cell (707) 889-4805.
