Alternate title: Why , Beloved, do you always wear that ribbon on your little finger?

Submission for this week’s One Single Impression prompt: circles. This week marks the first anniversary of One Single Impression. Happy Birthday, OSI!

Friend’s dog, Bogey

As in ‘and Bacall’

walks on a wire mesh bridge

over a dry irrigation canal

toes spread

body hunched

tail tucked

little whines

perfectly safe

perfectly unaware.

Walking behind him

I laugh with affection

at his goofiness

but hope he doesn’t hear me.

I do not wish to embarrass his sweet self.

Sometimes

I wonder if that is how

God quietly and politely

laughs behind his/her hand

at our fear and vociferous distress

about how unsafe this and all worlds are.

God’s outright laughter

might embarrass our little selves.

as we inch our way across,

Minutely adjusting for superstition

and Wind Factor,

If only we knew

that this lifeline-tightrope

could Love us no more devotedly

than to suddenly shake like a dog

and tumble us

screaming

with tears and laughter

Into A Featherbed

And the arms

of the Beloved

lying in wait

with chocolate

and kisses

and the best Beaujolais.

Laughter would then

rock the universe.

We forget to remember to laugh.

The circles in my mind

trace

God dreaming the universe

as an elaborate plan

to drive us into the arms

of the only thing that can

save us.

Note to self: remember to Find, or better yet Make, some lovely ribbon.

One Single Impression is a community of poets writing and sharing haiku and other poetic forms. Each week new prompts are offered up to our often lazy muses. Come play with us!
