May we never be remembered

As we prepare for Memorial Day here in the US, it is sweet to post about a story and a prayer for never being remembered! This story is a recent post from Paulo Coelho’s blog, one that I keep track of on Netvibes.

At the Sceta monastery, the abbot Lucas gathered the monks for the sermon.

“May you never be remembered,” he said.

“What do you mean?” replied one of the brothers. “May our example not help those who might need it?” Read the rest of the story

What a profound goal…to make goodness so commonplace that it bears no mention…

This reminds me of one of Mother Teresa’s beloved prayers:

Deliver me…

From the desire of being loved,

From the desire of being extolled,

From the desire to being honored,

From the desire of being praised,

From the desire of being preferred,

From the desire of being consulted,

From the desire of being approved,

From the desire of being popular,

From the fear of being humiliated,

From the fear of being despised,

From the fear of suffering rebukes,

From the fear of being calumniated,

From the fear of being forgotten,

From the fear of being wronged,

From the fear of being ridiculed,

From the fear of being suspected.

And I add one more phrase, if I may:

“And in so doing, may I truly be forgotten.”

Amen.
